Because of this cold-weather requirement, no members of the genus Prunus can grow in tropical climates.
In 2014, world production of sweet cherries was 2.25 million tonnes, with Turkey producing 20% of this total.
Due to the very different physical conditions of Turkey, there can be differences of up to 1.5 months in terms of ripening of cherries between regions.
With the use of modern agricultural methods, the yield and quality of cherries increase.
Wild types are abundant in the North Anatolian Mountains and Eastern Taurus Mountains in our country.
